Everything you'd want to know first.

What a tattoo actually is

A tattoo is pigment placed in the dermis — the stable layer beneath the skin you can see. The needle moves fast, but shallow: a millimeter or two, depending on skin thickness and where on the body you are. Immune cells called macrophages swallow the ink and hold onto it — and when one dies, the next one picks it back up. That relay, running for decades, is what makes a tattoo permanent.

What actually happens at the shop

You talk, they listen. A good artist asks what it means, where it goes, and how you live — then tells you what will actually work on skin. This is where your Inktuition brief earns its keep: you arrive with taste and a concept already on the table.

A short history of ink

Ötzi the Iceman, frozen 5,300 years ago, carries 61 tattoos. Every inhabited continent developed the practice independently — for medicine, status, grief, protection. Tattooing isn't a trend that got old; it's a human constant.

The styles, defined

Single-needle or tight groupings, delicate weight, lots of skin left open. Elegant and quiet — but thin lines soften more with age, so scale and placement matter.

Pain, honestly

A hot scratch, more annoying than unbearable — over muscle. Read that differently over bone, joints, or thin skin: sharper, and it stays sharp. Lining bites more than shading. Around hour three, everything gets louder: that's fatigue, not damage. Your map below is more useful than any average.

Healing & aftercare

It's a wound that happens to be beautiful. Expect redness, seeping ink and plasma, and heat. Wash gently with unscented soap, pat dry, thin layer of the ointment your artist named. No pools, no gym, no sun.

How ink ages

Ink particles sit in living tissue that shifts a fraction every year. Over a decade, lines thicken slightly and edges soften — like a photograph printed on something alive. This is not failure; it is the medium.

Questions to ask your artist

Healed photos. Anyone can look good the day of — healed work six months out is the truth about line quality and saturation. Confident artists love being asked.

Money & etiquette

Hourly (commonly $150–250 in US cities) or a flat day/piece rate. Shop minimums — often $80–150 — exist because setup and sterilization cost the same for a dot as for a dragon. The quote covers skill, drawing time, and materials.
